Our Values
Our values are captured in the concept of Doughnut Economics — enough for everyone’s needs, but living within the capacity of the natural environment around us. In brief:
Build the local economy with care for the environment
- Prioritize public investment to meet everyone’s basic needs while reducing environmental harm
- Fund programs and infrastructure that reduce emissions in Nanaimo and improve our resilience to climate change and other disasters
Affordable and Convenient Communities
- Promote development of affordable neighbourhoods where daily necessities are within walking distance
- Develop programs and infrastructure that make active and public transportation options safe, reliable, and accessible for people of all ages and abilities
Equitable health, safety, and food
- Enhance local food security
- Seek innovative solutions to increasing access to primary and urgent care, and mental health and addiction services
- Strive for greater access to public parks, community centers, and community gardens for all neighbourhoods
- Increase tree canopy and permeable infrastructure to keep neighbourhoods cool and conserve water
Government accountability
- Foster transparency and accountability in city policy and budgeting to build public trust around city taxes and spending
- Improve communication and cooperation with other levels of government
- Support municipal autonomy to shape land use to protect the health of people and the environment
